20 Alternative 2014 Movie Awards

17. Best Action Scene - Quicksilver's Prison Dash

For such a short sequence, a lot of work was put into creating Quicksilver's memorable sprint around the kitchen in Bryan Singer's superhero sequel. Partially shot at 3600 frames per second to create the illusion of time slowing down, the effects teams also shot close-ups of actor Evan Peters that would seamlessly blend into the scene along with a huge number of CGI-created elements. Set to the tune of 'Time In A Bottle', the sequence is one of the undoubted highlights of the movie. As well as both highlighting Quicksilver's mutant powers in a unique way and embracing the character's mischievous nature, the scene also provides one of the wittiest, most inventive and memorable set-pieces across the entire X-Men franchise.

Runner Up - Snowpiercer's Train Assault

Bong Joon-ho's English language debut is one of the year's best genre efferts, a gripping dystopian sci-fi that features excellent work from the ensemble cast, not to mention some stunning cinematography and production design. The movie also features one of the year's best action scenes, as the motley crew of train-dwellers advance through the carriages in an attempt to stage an uprising. Both visceral and exciting in equal measure, the close-quarters axe-wielding is expertly choreographed and enhanced by urgent camerawork and some flinch-inducing sound design.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
