20 Amazing Facts About All About Eve
4. Bette Davis Wanted A Sequel
After the film’s release, Bette Davis was desperate for Joseph L. Mankiewicz to write a sequel with a story that focused on Margo and her lover Bill. Davis got the inspiration for this as she fell in love with her co-star Gary Merrill (Bill) during the shoot of the movie.
The two married in July that same year (very soon after her divorce from William Grant Sherry) and they adopted daughter whom they named Margot, after Davis's screen character.
Many years later, after she and Merrill had married and divorced, Davis bumped into Mankiewicz at a party and said “Joe, you can forget the sequel. I’ve played it and it doesn’t work”. Much like their film roles, the two had fell in love with the characters they were portraying and not themselves.
At ten years, this was her longest lasting marriage.
