20 Amazing Facts About All About Eve
3. All About Eve Is Considered One Of The Earliest Examples Of Feminism In The Movies
Part of the reason why All About Eve has garnered a timeless quality is because its themes and characters are still relevant to audiences today. Joseph L. Mankiewicz was always fascinated by actresses which is why he was able to effortlessly write the female characters with such depth and potency.
When Mankiewicz read ‘The Wisdom of Eve’, the idea that women were considered no longer beautiful or able to hold on to a star role once they turned forty struck a chord with him. He transformed the story into a fantastic character study of two different women - Eve Harrington, the ruthless snake, and Margo Channing, who seemingly has it all but fears she is nearing the end of her career.
It’s an examination of women’s fears of getting older, the female ambition and the theme of women being silenced by men and how they are able to turn it back on their male counterparts.
The sharp script allows for all the female characters to have the best lines and the entire film represents women in the most realistic form. They may be flawed (as good characters should be) but they still get their voices heard.
This is just one of the reasons why All About Eve remains a timeless masterpiece.
