20 Awesome Horror Movies That Never Got Sequels
10. The Vanishing (1988)
The Dutch 1988 horror-thriller The Vanishing is one of the most chilling films ever made - a mesmerisingly unconventional serial killer movie which culminates with a jaw-dropping ending that's pretty much impossible to forget.
And though the film ends - spoiler! - with the murderous Raymond (Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu) getting away with his crimes, there has never been a follow-up on what happens next.
And frankly that's how it should be - the entire point of the movie is to shirk the conventions of the typical serial killer film while serving up one of cinema's all-time best depictions of a sociopath.
That Raymond gets away scot-free and returns to his blissfully unaware family is entirely the point, and to unpick that for a sequel would be materially wrong.
Instead, the film's writer-director George Sluizer himself remade The Vanishing in the English language in 1993, with a deeply unpopular new Hollywood ending in which the killer is himself killed.
As it stands, the original '88 film is a perfect organism of a movie that warrants no follow-up whatsoever.
