Trick 'r Treat is a rare horror anthology that's pretty much fantastic from start to finish, though was bafflingly sent straight-to-DVD in 2009, ensuring it only slowly won itself a cult of loyal fans over the years that followed.

Almost 20 years later, the film is a Halloween favourite for many, and it's no exaggeration to say that the trick-or-treating demon Sam has become a genuine genre icon in his own right.

Writer-director Michael Dougherty has been trying to get a sequel made pretty much ever since the first one came out, though the original's $12 million budget without any sort of box office return probably hasn't helped it get made.

Dougherty has nevertheless continued to provide updates, revealing in late 2024 that he's very happy with the current state of the script, though getting it in front of cameras is another matter altogether.

Dougherty claimed that it's a matter of resources - likely meaning budget - holding Trick 'r Treat 2 up, and considering he's also stated he won't make the sequel if he can't do it the right way, that seems like the direction things will probably keep going.
