20 Awesome Horror Villains Introduced In TERRIBLE Movies

10. La Llorona - The Curse of La Llorona

The titular vengeful ghost from 2019's Conjuring Universe movie The Curse of La Llorona wasn't an original creation for the film, but a pre-existing figure from Latin American folklore whose origins go back roughly 500 years.

La Llorona (Marisol Ramirez), also known as The Weeping Woman, is a ghostly entity who roams near bodies of water, mourning her children she drowned in a jealous fury due to her husband's infidelity.

Anyone who happens to hear La Llorona's crying will suffer either misfortune or death.

It shouldn't have been hard to make a compelling horror film out of such a fascinating slice of centuries-old folklore, then, but the film ultimately reduced its rich inspiration to a battery of generic jump scares and little else.

The very same year La Llorona, a Guatemalan "arthouse" take on the legend, was also released to considerably greater acclaim, though predictably received little attention from the mainstream.

There is scant hope for this Hollywood iteration, though, as a sequel, The Revenge of La Llorona, was recently confirmed to be in development.

Fingers crossed that it digs a little deeper and ditches the stodgy, played-out scares of its predecessor for something that'll actually stick with audiences.
