There's a strange paradox to Guillermo del Toro's decades-in-the-making Frankenstein adaptation, because while it's a gorgeous, sumptuous feast of a horror film, it's still a thoroughly mid-tier entry into the filmmaker's hallowed filmography.

That of course says less about Frankenstein than it does del Toro's highly celebrated back catalogue, because by any standard metric his take on Mary Shelley's classic text is a banger alright - topped by an Oscar-nominated performance from Jacob Elordi in the title role.

But beyond Frankenstein ultimately being a middle-calibre del Toro film, it's also unavoidably an adaptation of a text we've seen brought to the screen so, so many times before.

Even with del Toro's unique flavour, there's just not a whole lot here to entice people back for another go-around. We all know the story, and if you're gonna come back to any del Toro movie, there are at least five or six others you should prioritise before this one.
