20 Awesome Recent Horror Movies You'll Never Watch Again
1. The Shrouds
And finally we have David Cronenberg's most recent film The Shrouds, which is without question the most personal and achingly raw work in the esteemed director's entire filmography to date.
The film, which revolves around a businessman (Vincent Cassel) who invents a technology to livestream his late wife's (Diane Kruger) decaying corpse, was inspired by the death of Cronenberg's own wife, Carolyn Zeifman, in 2017.
And boy, it sure shows.
Beyond the fact that Cassel's grey-haired protagonist Karsh bears a striking resemblance to a younger Cronenberg, the entire film effectively feels like art-as-therapy for the director, crafting a mesmerising body-horror film to reconcile his own existential dread in the wake of overwhelming loss.
To that end it's a fascinating and unforgettable piece of work, if also one that's so discomfortingly personal that we, the audience, might feel we're intruding upon something we weren't really supposed to see.
A single viewing is probably enough for most, then.
