20 Baffling IMDb Top 250 Placements You Won't Believe
15. V For Vendetta
The Film:
An adaptation of the Alan Moore graphic novel of the same name, which focuses on a masked revolutionary in a dystopian London. It was written by the Wachowski siblings and the Guy Fawkes mask that V (Hugo Weaving) wears has become a prominent symbol of popular culture.
Placement: #150
Why It's Wrong:
Once again, a film that's actually quite underrated has found its way onto the list. The politics are a bit simplistic, but there's plenty of drama and thrills and the performances and visuals are strong, even though Natalie Portman's English accent is quite dodgy.
It's great to see V for Vendetta getting the recognition it didn't get when it was released, but it's difficult to justify placing it at #150. There are issues with the film, especially with its slow pace, and it shouldn't have got quite so high up. It deserves to be on the Top 250 - it's a successful cult classic after all - but to put it as this spot blows the film out of proportion. It's once again surprising that an often-ignored film was able to get so high up. Evidently, it's acquired a legion of loyal fans.
In spite of this wrong placement, V For Vendetta is still worth checking out for sure. Given its relative lack of action and focus on its characters, this is a blockbuster for people who don't like blockbusters. It has a great use of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture too.
