Speaking of dystopias… Does the map of Panem look familiar to anybody?

The country of Panem, in which the Capitol and Districts of the Hunger Games are set, is actually based on a post-apocalyptic, true-dystopian North America. The story of the Games is so brutal, so utterly out-there, that it is easy imagining it being set on another planet, never mind our own.

Alas, Panem is North America, and depicts what happened after ecological disasters and global conflict brought about the collapse of modern civilisation.

It may not be as large as the North America we know today — the books describing this as due to rising sea level flooding its corners — but it is based on the country all the same. Let’s just hope it never actually gets to that point…
