Though it was suggested that Fury Road is actually a reboot of the Mad Max franchise, there are hints that it actually follows Beyond Thunderdome, not least in the brief, tragic cameo from the Gyro Captain who appeared in the first two sequels. When the Road Warrior is tied to the front of one of the War Boys' vehicles, the totem he's fastened to has a skull mounted at the top wearing the captain's skull cap and flight goggles. So that's probably confirmation that he's not going to be returning for any potential sequels.
