In 2010 Denis Villeneuve was a major player in Canadian cinema, but barely known in the mainstream world. Now he's produced two of the biggest thrillers of the decade, the ultimate WTF movie and is currently filming the sequel to Blade Runner (and, to cap it off, nobody's worried about that movie in his hands). Not too shabby.

After the family mystery Incendies he moved to the English language, but while that increased his stock it did nothing to dampen his cinematic voice - Prisoners and Sicario were crowd-pleasing thrillers, but they also had a weight to their grim violence, while Enemy was an intoxicating, literal mind-f*ck. He appears to be a master collaborator, getting the best out of everyone he works with, be they knock-out actors (Jake Gyllenhaal) or master cinematographers (Roger Deakins).
