20 Best Films Of 2017 (So Far)
6. The Lego Batman Movie
In a world currently defined by the grim, gritty take on Batman who rules over the DCEU, there was no doubt some disquiet over how well the heavily parodying, delightfully funny LEGO Batman Movie staked its claim of being one of the best Batman movies ever made. It's certainly far, far more entertaining than Zack Snyder's version.
The excellent spin-off is a lovingly crafted homage to Batman, which mercifully steers clear of welcoming in too many cheap gags, and crucially it is steeped in Batman's mythology. For it to be so deeply aware of the symbolism and iconography of the character at the same time as offering a layered entertainment experience is quite stunning indeed.
Director Chris McKay gave his team enough scope to put their love of Batman into the film, and they responded by adding a glorious a number of Easter Eggs that make it a multi-watch necessity. And if it inspires further films in this franchise, it is no bad thing at all.
