20 Best Indie Movies Of 2018

1. Hereditary

And though our #1 pick might be the highest-grossing film on this list by a colossal margin, it's still a thorough indie film at its core, a minimalist, slow-burn horror shot for a mere $9 million.

One of the most potent and unforgettable depictions of grief and mental illness ever put to screen, Hereditary gives Toni Collette the floor to deliver a masterful performance as grieving daughter Annie, in what's one of the finest acting showcases of this year or really any other.

First-time director Ari Aster meanwhile shoots scenes like a sure veteran, having complete confidence in his vision and never wavering.

Hereditary's lack of jump scares and restrained, quiet approach to atmosphere may deter more mainstream audiences - hence its comical "D+" CinemaScore - but for those craving suffocating atmosphere, brilliant acting and palpable drama to match all the unease, this is the best horror film in years.
