2019 is the year where Scarlett Johansson finally graduated to awards darling - quite appropriately given the near-wrapping-up of her MCU tenure - with her performance as embattled wife Nicole Barber in Marriage Story.

Though co-star Adam Driver has understandably been picking up the lion's share of the movie's praise, there's certainly plenty to go around, and Johansson absolutely earns her prestige stripes with a devastatingly haunting, wounded performance here.

The anguish of divorce has almost never been felt this palpably on screen before, Johansson bearing her soul on the screen and in turn delivering easily the most evocative work of her entire career.

Avoiding the obvious temptation to over-act the material, she makes all the right choices, and will duly be rewarded with a Best Actress Oscar nomination as a result.
