20 Best Netflix Original Movies Of 2019 - Ranked

1. Marriage Story

Marriage Story Adam Driver Scarlett Johansson
Netflix

Marriage Story isn't exactly the most cheerful movie you can watch over the festive period, but it's essential viewing, even if you decide to save it for the cold light of January.

With two powerhouse performances from Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson - the former of whom deserves an Oscar win, the latter at least a nomination - a refreshingly honest look at the nuances of a breakup, and a minimalist filmmaking approach that is accented with a few delightful Wes Anderson-style beats of humour, Noah Baumbach's latest is his most compelling work to date.

There's an argument scene in the middle of the film that's one of the finest acting displays in recent memory, made all the more impressive by the fact that the camera will often stay still for an extended period of time, soaking up all the intensity of the scene and funnelling it right into your eyeballs.

Marriage Story is transfixing from start to end, and it's honestly quite amazing that we got it for free on Netflix.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for over ten years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. In 2022, he took charge of WhoCulture and has grown it into the biggest Doctor Who channel on YouTube, and one of the biggest Doctor Who communities on the web full-stop. He has been writing and video editing since his early teens, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers, off the back of a burning obsession with the Matt Smith era of the show. Like many his age, he first got into Doctor Who with the 2005 revival, but has since gone back and fallen in love with the classic years too. If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order, or to give you a random factoid about the making of Gridlock, Danny is the person to ask!
