19. Death of a Unicorn
Death of a Unicorn ultimately didn't live up to its full potential, but it at least served up a riotously amusing opening.
Here we're introduced to lawyer Elliot Kintner (Paul Rudd) and his teenage daughter Ridley (Jenna Ortega) as they make their way to the lavish estate of Elliot's boss, Odell Leopold (Richard E. Grant), for the weekend.
During the drive, however, Elliot accidentally hits a horse-like animal with his car, which upon closer inspection is revealed to be a unicorn.
As the pair consider what to do, Ridley kneels down and touches the injured unicorn's horn, where she has a bizarre, beautiful vision... which is suddenly interrupted by Elliot beating the unicorn to death with a tire iron, soaking the pair of them in purple blood.
Every movie needs an inciting incident to get the story moving, and this was a pretty damn wild one - even if, again, the rest of the movie didn't quite measure up to it.
