The opening moments of Zach Cregger's Weapons are basically a masterclass in how to lure the audience in.
This prologue sequence onboards us to the strange story of the seventeen children who went missing from Maybrook Elementary School, with slightly eerie narration from a young child who we never see.
She sets the scene and also introduces us to central characters such as Justine (Julia Garner) and Alex (Cary Christopher), before an offputtingly upbeat montage shows many of the children suddenly running from their homes, arms outstretched like planes, and disappearing into the night.
Within five minutes of the movie starting, the bonkers premise has been established, we know a few of the characters, and a whole heap of tantalising mysteries have been dropped at our feet.
It's easy to see how those first few pages of the script alone sparked a Hollywood bidding war for the project, and Cregger thankfully managed to follow it through for the remainder.
