20 Best Sci-Fi Films Of The 21st Century
12. 28 Days Later
Forget best of the century. 28 Days Later stands as not only one of the best z-word movies of all time but also one of the best horror movies as well.
The opening moments are a testament to Danny Boyle's skills as a filmmaker, and that the pitch black with screaming hordes of zombies aren't what make great horror. Jim's initial steps outside of the hospital only to discover an empty London, devoid of any soul is beyond tense and wonderfully sets the tone for what's to come in the rest of the film. Honestly, is there anything more terrifying or unsettling than a desolate imitation of a metropolitan city?
Not to mention the stellar cast. Cillian Murphy plays Jim with a sympathetic earnestness, a man who we're drip fed information about throughout the movie, and the on screen chemistry between himself and his cast mates is palpable. Christopher Eccleston also knocks it out of the park later in the game as the genuinely stomach churning villain Major West.
Also, do we have to mention that scene? Is there anything more badass than Cillian Murphy going on a murderous rampage whilst Godspeed You Black Emperor! rages in the background? No, there isn't.
