20 Best Sci-Fi Horror Movies Of The 21st Century
17. Brightburn
Imagine if Superman didn't stand for "the truth, justice and the American way". Instead, imagine somebody had accidentally spliced the film reel from The Omen into Superman The Movie. After, you pretty much have Brightburn.
Rather than be the coming of age story of an alien who grows up believing in good and protecting people, Brightburn goes down the darker path.
Much, much darker.
James Gunn's villainous origin story may not have been the most original concept, but the execution is pure comic book. We know he's good at doing small-town scale panic, as Slither captured that perfectly too.
The story of young alien Brandon struggling with growing up and developing his powers is a visual delight. It's every "What if Superman was a dick?" story, fully fleshed out on screen. Each time a new power grows, you wonder how the young villain is going to put it to use.
While the ending may fall into vaguely ambitious, Shyamalan-like territory with its sequel baiting, it doesn't detract from the film as a whole.
Would we like to see a fleshed out Brightburn universe, told from a villain's perspective? Heck yes, we would.
