1. That's Impossible! - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
The climactic showdown between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back was a confrontation fans had been waiting for ever since the first movie hit theaters, and when Irvin Kershner's follow-up finally hit the big screen audiences were left speechless by one of the biggest and most famous reveals in cinematic history. Losing a hand is bad enough, but finding out that the guy who did it is your father? Talk about a bad day. Of course, prior to all the hand-slicing and daddy issues, the two iconic characters engaged in one of the best lightsaber duels across all six movies. While it may not be as frenetic and fast-paced as many of the other scraps in the franchise, the personal stakes are much higher and the tension is almost unbearable as Luke goes deeper into Cloud City's central air shaft, with Vader seemingly one step ahead at every turn. Hearing the villain utter the immortal words 'I am your father' was a sucker punch to both audiences and the character of Luke, and a revelation that turned the Star Wars mythology on its head.
