20 Coming-Of-Age Movies That Are Totally Flawless
1. Boyhood (2014)
The most incredible thing about Boyhood is that it even exists. Filmed over twelve years to allow its cast to grow naturally with the story, Richard Linklater's epic experimental drama simply follows Mason Evans (Ellar Coltrane) as he grows into adulthood.
Poignant in its simplicity and authentic character development, Boyhood particularly shines with its cast - especially Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke - all of whom commit wholeheartedly to Linklater's gutsy vision.
The fact is there's no film quite like it, and none with take the coming-of-age angle more literally or poetically. It's constantly wise, challenging, and beautiful, and despite its unconventional birth always feels organic and real, like a cinematic documentary.
As far as coming-of-age movies go, it doesn't get any better than Boyhood.
