As fans of Casino Royale will recall, James Bond experienced a very painful encounter on a barge with Mads Mikkelsen's Le Chiffre, who took sadistic pleasure in attacking the naked agent's nether regions with a length of rope whilst Bond was tied to a bottomless chair.

MI6 proves itself to be impliedly as dangerous as the organisation behind Le Chiffre (albeit slightly more civilised) in the opening sequence of Quantum of Solace.

When Mr. White (Jesper Christensen) is brought to its safe house in Siena, he is at first tended to by medics to remove the bullet that Double-0 Seven fired into his knee at the end of the previous film, before M and Bond interrogate him.

The tone of the safehouse is dark and dank, not unlike the barge where Le Chiffre tortured Bond in Casino Royale. This shows the visual continuity that director, Marc Forster; production designer, Dennis Gassner, and cinematographer, Roberto Schaefer hoped to bring to the opening scenes of Quantum of Solace, linking it to the previous entry in the franchise.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
