20 Feel Good Movies You Need To Watch Now
14. The Lion King (1994)
This is Disney at its grandest scale. Anybody whose anybody knows the epic tale of Simba – it’s a wonderful retelling of Hamlet, set with lions as characters in one of the most dynamic pieces of storytelling that Disney has ever done. It’s a musical, it’s a comedy, it’s a tragedy, it’s art!
The Lion King is more than just a beloved kids movie, it’s a richly themed drama which is why it resonates with us to this very day. The story is fruitful with lessons about maturity, dealing with loss and restoring order. Above all, the tale of tragedy demonstrates the importance of embracing the mistakes from your past and how you can amend them. In this case, Simba believes he caused the death of his father and flees from the kingdom. Living his life through the philosophy of “Hakuna Matata”, Simba can no longer ignore the question of whether to continue this life with no worries or face his demons and do what’s right. In the end, Simba returns to Pride Rock in order to overthrow his uncle’s evil reign and restore the kingdom back to normal. His story is a good reminder of not running away from your responsibilities but also not letting your mistakes hold you down from being happy.
But even if you don’t engage with the message critically, you’re still guaranteed a fantastic viewing. The films animators really captured the feeling of an African Safari – every frame of the movie overflowing with detail, fluidity in motion and bright colours. And of course, there’s plenty of light-hearted relief to be found in the film’s outlandish sidekicks – Timon and Pumbaa. It may have some heavy themes along the way but you’ll only feel better after watching it.
