20 Greatest Meta-Horror Movies Of All Time

12. There's Nothing Out There (1991)

Certainly the most underrated film on this list, There's Nothing Out There was one of the first films to openly mock horror film clichés that were so prevalent in particular low-budget slasher flicks. The slyly generic plot concerns three libidinous high school student couples and token fear flick fanatic Mike (Craig Peck) vacationing in a remote wilderness area. Said secluded forest proves to be the stalking grounds for a slimy, lethal alien frog monster that sees the guys as appetizing meals and the gals as ideal mates to copulate with. Mike's comprehensive knowledge on and keen understanding of derivative horror film banalities, which is initially a source of irritation to the other disbelieving teens, winds up saving the day, much to Mike's own surprise and the viewer's slack-jawed astonishment. A particular memorable €œMike€ moment involves the character scouring the basement in search of the film's obligatory monster, only to be surprised by a stray cat. As he's mocked for thinking the cat was a monster, Mike can only stare upwards in disbelief, asking, €œWhere did the cat come from? There€™s nothing up there but ceiling!€ A question that every horror nerd has asked a movie at some point in his life.
