Directed by Thom Eberhardt, Night Of The Comet is a funny, self-aware, self deprecating, well-paced little horror-comedy that details the story of two valley girls - Sam (Kelli Maroney) and Reggie (Catherine Mary Stewart) - figuring out how to stay alive in malls and clubs after a comet passes overhead one night, turning everyone exposed to it into ash or a zombie. What mostly breeds this film's self-awareness are the stray lines of dialogue that come off as painfully and hilariously put-on. For instance, when Reggie moodily tells her stepmother that Im like 18, and Im going to watch the comet wherever I want to watch the comet you laugh A) because its a horribly stupid line that a young girl would say, and B) you dont believe for a second that Stewart is 18. Hell, Stewart herself even says it with a healthy amount of contempt. The film continues in this hilarious tongue-in-cheek manner throughout the proceedings. Overall, Night Of The Comets is fun, silly, and ridiculously quotable. It also served as partial inspiration for Joss Whedon's Buffy The Vampire Slayer, which makes sense - the film certainly helped set the precedent for smart, self-aware teen heroines.
