Far away from Jack Nicholson's campy Joker, Ledger created a playful yet terrifying monster of an antagonist, undeterred by Batman's physical prowess and primed to push him to the psychological brink.

While debate will rage forever more over whether Ledger would've scored the Oscar were he still alive and what Nolan had planned to do with the character in future movies, it's on its own terms a spectacle of physical tics, demented playfulness and, of course, a crackerjack script.
