20 Greatest Performances In Superhero Movies

14. Danny DeVito - The Pengiun (Batman Returns)

Batman Returns The Penguin Danny Devito
Warner Bros.

The Penguin is an incredibly difficult character to adapt to the big screen, so it was probably for the best that Tim Burton totally leaned into the absurdity of the supervillain in Batman Returns.

This gave Danny DeVito quite the canvas to paint with, but his most remarkable achievement is in making of Oswald Cobblepot a dichotomously vile and sympathetic figure, dealt a bad hand from birth and suffering a deeply depressing (if oddly dignified) end.

DeVito's incredibly physical performance nails the violent grotesquery of the character, and it's simply maddening to believe that he actually scored a Worst Supporting Actor Razzie nomination for his work on the film. Oscar-worthy, more like.
