A remake of the 2010 Mexican film by the same name, this one comes from acclaimed director Jim Mickle, who also made vampire flick Stake Land and last year’s genre-crossing Cold In July.

It focuses on The Parkers, a reclusive family – led by the ruthless Frank (Bill Sage) - who follow ancient customs not shared by the community around them. As a torrential downpour threatens their home, it forces the two daughters to assume responsibilities beyond that of a normal family. Eventually this leads local law enforcement to start suspecting that something isn’t right with the seemingly wholesome family.

It’s less grimy than the original and is less of an art-house affair but also provides a stronger, more fascinating view of the family dynamics and delivers on the scares and shocks when it counts.
