Though many analysts predicted that the Pirates series was also going to be a victim of fatigue, Johnny Depp's flagship franchise continued to prove itself a mighty box office monster with its wild unnecessarily yet not-awful fifth movie.

A middle-of-the-pack sequel that's certainly more visually compelling and less self-indulgent than the series' worst entries, Dead Men Tell No Tales benefits from the visual flair of Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg's sharp direction and Kaya Scodelario's appealing new lead.

However, it's also saddled with another nonsense fantasy plot, a lame-brained third-act twist and it doesn't nearly begin to make the most of Javier Bardem, who is nevertheless clearly having fun. Easy viewing, and better than the previous two films, but not a return to form by any means.
