20 Horror Movie Characters Everyone Underestimated
16. Jill Roberts - Scream 4
When it was announced that Emma Roberts would be playing Sidney Prescott's (Neve Campbell) cousin Jill Roberts in Scream 4, it was widely assumed that she was effectively being drafted in as "the new Sidney."
Beyond being a close relative who resembled Sid, Jill also had a wholesome quality to her and appeared to be one of the film's most sensible characters.
And being portrayed by Emma Roberts, best known for playing sweet girl next door-types at the time, sure didn't hurt either.
Basically, Jill was Final Girl-coded from the moment she was introduced, and so audiences seemingly expected her to be teed up as Sidney's successor for future sequels.
What just about nobody expected was for Jill to actually be Scream 4's main Ghostface killer, having masterminded all the murders out of a desire to usurp Sidney's fame and become the new darling survivor.
Jill's psychopathy extends to brutally wounding herself in an attempt to sell her victim status, and she actually gets incredibly close to pulling her plan off - stabbing Sidney but not quite finishing the job.
Well done, Jill - you were far more of a lunatic than anyone could've ever expected.
