20 Horror Movie Characters Everyone Underestimated
15. Crystal May Creasey - The Hunt
At the start of the satirical action horror film The Hunt, there isn't much reason to expect a lot from Crystal May Creasey (Betty Gilpin), who appears to be just another member of the helpless group of conservative "deplorables" being hunted down by the liberal elite.
More to the point, Betty Gilpin wasn't among the more recognisable members of the ensemble cast, so it was a fair assumption that she wouldn't be making it too far through the story.
But The Hunt is all about subverting expectations - for one Emma Roberts, who many assumed to be the film's Final Girl, is shot and killed at the very start of the story, and we soon start to realise that Crystal is far more than another disposable human body.
Crystal proves herself extremely smart and self-reliant, and is later revealed to have served in Afghanistan - far from the hapless yokel the elite hunters believed her to be.
This is ultimately because Crystal isn't the deplorable they thought she was either - they intended to kidnap a woman with the same name who made inflammatory posts on social media, and so Crystal's involvement in the hunt is a case of mistaken identity.
But Crystal comes out the other side in one piece, while demonstrating abject disgust for both the murderous liberals and hateful conservatives - hardly a result many saw coming when she was first introduced.
