20 Horror Movies From The 21st Century That Didn't Actually Suck
14. Shaun Of The Dead (2004)
This rom-zom-com is a fresh take on the horror comedy (a genre all but destroyed by the Scary Movie franchise). Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright's love for zombie films, primarily those of George A. Romero, is seen in almost every shot as we follow loveable idiot Shaun and his offensive mate Ed (Nick Frost) as they save those they love in a desperate attempt for one last pint in their local.
What helps this film most of all is the fact that it is both funny and horrific. For all of Ed's crude one-liners, the moment where Shaun has to shoot his zombified mother (Penelope Wilton) in the head is one of the most upsetting horror moments of the decade. The film also works for those who don't like horror because it is actually very funny and, through Kate Ashfield's Liz, sweet and romantic too.
Shot through with in-gags, star cameos and a brilliant soundtrack, this essentially launched the careers of Wright, Pegg and Frost in Hollywood. There are so many good moments in this great film but perhaps the strongest is Shaun walking to and from his local corner shop, completely oblivious to the carnage surrounding him. If ever there was a warning to the anonymity of big city life, it's right there in one brilliant, continuous shot.
