20 Horror Movies Nobody Expected To Be Good
6. The Toxic Avenger (2025)
When it comes to cult cinema, it doesn't get any schlockier or gorier than what Troma Entertainment has produced. From the likes of Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D., Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, and Tromeo and Juliet, the Troma team has given horror fanatics decades of absurd fun. Out of everything they've released, though, nothing has become as iconic as The Toxic Avenger.
Co-directed by studio founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, the story of a mild-mannered janitor who's transformed into an irradiated, tutu-wearing antihero is the epitome of the unapologetic depravity that Troma embodies. After spawning several sequels (and even a child-friendly TV show), the thought of Toxie's big screen outing being remade without Kaufman at the helm seemed unthinkable to fans.
Once audiences saw writer and director Macon Blair's modern iteration of The Toxic Avenger, though, all doubts were quickly thrown aside.
Starring Peter Dinklage, the remake is overflowing with the sort of unhinged violence, gratuitous gore, and crude humour that made the original a cult favourite. The flick is so over-the-top that there were reports of multiple walk-outs from those who couldn't stomach the insanity, and Blair's film is every bit as outrageous as Toxie's fans could have hoped.
