With the runaway success of Obsession and Backrooms, the trend of YouTubers making feature films shows no sign of slowing down.

Another creator who made the leap to the big screen was Mark "Markiplier" Fischbach, who wrote, directed, financed, and starred in Iron Lung. Based on the short game of the same name by David Szymanski, the plot follows a convict (Fischbach) as he's sealed inside a claustrophobic submarine and sent to explore an alien blood ocean.

On paper, this had everything going against it. Not only do game adaptations have a history of underperforming, but it was also Fischbach's first feature film, and it had zero studio backing. Iron Lung could've easily become a vanity project; however, Fischbach's passion and talent saw his debut become a massive box office success.

The YouTuber-turned-filmmaker showcased incredible acting chops that were strong enough to carry the feature on his own shoulders. Fischbach likewise captured the same anxiety-inducing atmosphere that made the game so unsettling. An extra Lovecraftian twist also brought a new layer of intrigue to the plot as it concluded in spectacularly bloody fashion.

With Iron Lung, Fischbach proved himself to be a director to watch out for.
