Creature features are commonplace in the world of horror cinema, with the vast majority of them not being very good. When audiences saw that the premise for Crawl boiled down to "alligators in a flooded house", it was easy to assume that this flick would fall squarely into the pile of forgettable B-movies. It also didn't help that it was directed by Alexandre Aja, whose uneven track record in horror included the underwhelming likes of Mirrors and Piranha 3D.

When the film hit cinemas in summer 2019, viewers were pleased to discover a taut thriller that was smartly written and carried by a solid performance from Kaya Scodelario.

The plot sees Scodelario play Haley, an accomplished swimmer who decides to check on her estranged father (Barry Pepper) as a category five hurricane approaches. When she finds him injured in the crawl space, mauled by an alligator, her situation quickly becomes perilous as the old house begins to flood and more of the reptilian predators get inside.

What follows is a thoroughly gripping survival thriller in which Haley is forced to think on her feet to survive. The result is a blast from start to finish that shouldn't be missed.
