Hide and Seek follows David Callaway, a grieving psychologist who moves to a new home with his daughter, Emily, after the death of his wife, Alison.

David believes Emily is struggling with her mother's passing, since she performs disturbing acts around the house and blames them on her imaginary friend, Charlie. But over time, David suspects this mysterious friend may be real.

We are naturally on David's side for most of the run-time, since he's recently widowed and is trying to do what's best for his child. However, all sympathy for David goes out the window when it's unveiled that he and Charlie are one and the same.

In a flashback, we learn that Charlie saw Alison kissing another man at a New Year's Eve party. Too timid to confront his wife, David unconsciously created a volatile alter called Charlie, who murdered Alison and framed her death as a suicide.

To be fair, David isn't fully to blame, since there's no question he's not in control of his actions, but after he commits numerous murders (including his poor cat), defending David becomes pretty much impossible.
