20 Horror Movies That Made You Root For The Wrong Person

15. Hollow Man

Hollow Man Kevin Bacon
Columbia Pictures

Most entries on this list focus on an evil character who's deceptively depicted as pure of heart. Hollow Man takes a different approach, since the lead character starts nobly.

Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi horror opens with brilliant scientist Sebastian Caine perfecting a formula that turns animals invisible. Needing a human test subject for the next phase, Sebastian willingly volunteers himself. However, when the other scientists are unable to return Sebastian to being 'visible', he becomes mentally unstable.

Sebastian comes across as a good guy for the first hour because, well, he is. He's playful, passionate, and caring towards his colleagues and the test animals. Rather than pressurising anyone to be the human guinea pig, he agrees to the invisibility experiment himself. Even when he starts lashing out, you still feel sorry for Sebastian, since it's likely he'll never see his face in the mirror again. Just to add salt to the wounds, he'll also probably be forced to live in the lab forever.

But after seeing him slaughtering animals, forcing himself on women, and performing cold-blooded murder, Sebastian Crane is as much a monster as Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger.
