20 Idiotic Decisions Made By Characters In Quentin Tarantino Movies
11. Stuntman Mike Stops To "Treat" His Gunshot Wound (Death Proof)
Up to the point of Death Proof's third act, we'd assumed that Stuntman Mike was a total bad*ss who wouldn't let a simple thing like a bullet bring him down. However, when he launches his assault on Abernathy (Rosario Dawson), Kim (Tracie Thoms), Lee (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Zoe Bell (playing herself), he didn't quite bank on them fighting back. While the girls are playing a dangerous game called Ship's Mast, in which Zoe rides on top of the car, using just two belts to secure herself, Mike attacks the car from behind, eventually hurling Zoe from the roof. Satisfied with his work, he nevertheless ends up being shot by Kim, causing him to flee while Zoe, who miraculously survived, rejoins the girls. It's at this point that Mike's veneer drops, and he pulls over to "medicate", by sobbing to himself, asking, "Oh, why!?", chugging a bottle of whiskey and then pouring plenty of it into the gunshot wound on his arm. Mike is parked up for well over a minute, giving the girls ample time to catch up to him and rear-end his car, allowing them to ultimately gain the upper-hand and eventually kill him. Sure, it would've been painful, but if Mike was truly going to flee the girls, what about driving a little longer and getting to true safety before parking up and licking his wounds?
