11. "There Are No Two Words In The English Language More Harmful Than 'Good Job'." - Whiplash
Another line that does a fantastic job of encompassing the thematic basis of the whole movie is this fantastic quote from J.K. Simmons' terrifying drum teacher Fletcher to his student Andrew (Miles Teller). Fletcher pushes Andrew to and past the brink over the course of the movie, which argues rather persuasively that compliments can only be damaging to a person, because they encourage complacency, whereas relentless criticism will constantly push someone to improve, no matter how brilliant they already are. It's an undeniably provocative thought to consider, if also an uncomfortable truth most would prefer not to accept.
