Cars is easily one of Pixar's most profitable franchises, doubling-down on cars and racing, but the plot of the movie was originally completely different.

It didn't end up hitting theaters until 2006, but Pixar was working on the film in some form since 1998 after finishing A Bug's Life. Originally it was a script called The Yellow Car about an electric car in a gas-guzzling world. A bunch of character designs were made, and although John Lasseter liked the idea, he didn't think it was enough to sustain an entire film. The movie was put on hold as the studio made Toy Story 2.

When they picked it back up, some script changes were made, such as giving characters like Mater a larger role. By 2001, the film had changed its title to Route 66 (later changed to Cars to avoid confusion with the 1960 TV show) and eventually the electric car idea was completely abandoned.
