20 More So-Called Happy Movie Endings That Absolutely Aren't
15. Avatar
When Avatar released back in 2009, it was nothing short of a cultural phenomenon, as it smashed its way to becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time. Though it may have taken well over a decade, sequels were always going to happen.
Not only was it widely known that James Cameron had a plan for five films, but the story ended in such a way that invited trouble coming back to Pandora, though this was disguised slightly as a happy ending for Jake (Sam Worthington) and his Na'vi tribe.
Led by Jake and Neytiri (Zoe SaldaƱa), the native Pandorans were able to fight back against the Sky People and defend their land, though not without first suffering huge losses, both physically and spiritually. Eventually, the humans were defeated and sent back to Earth with their tails between their legs. The Na'vi had won, right?
Except they weren't exactly sent home with any kind of deterrent to stop them from coming back. All the humans were ever going to do was regroup and return harder than before, something that was ultimately proved true in Avatar: The Way of Water and Fire and Ash, as the humans' occupation of Pandora was stronger than ever before.
