Rotten Tomatoes: 96% From 196 Reviews Horror films aren't supposed to finish high on end of year lists: they're supposed to be a quirk of a forgotten time that refuse to die, propelled occasionally by new gimmicks that fade away in tides just as quickly as they appear. But nobody told David Robert Mitchell - or his film's fans - who proved that a simple, compelling idea is all it takes to engross an audience. It Follows is really a twin success, managing to be terrifying (and not just in disposable terms) AND beautiful and intriguingly made. There's something old in its sensibilities (and the link between sex and scares), but it stops short of borrowing wholesale atmospherics or aesthetic cliches. For that reason it was roundly praised by critics who are usually less than enthusiastic about anything in the genre. But then maybe if every horror film was like this there wouldn't be so much need to be cynical... Sample Review:
"Less a conventional scary horror film than a fitful, disturbing dream, It Follows is all about atmosphere, with an unsettling soundscape and dislocating widescreen imagery." - Liam Lacey, Globe And Mail
