20 Most Anticipated Sci-Fi Movies Arriving In 2026

9. The Bride!

The Bride Jessie Buckley
Netflix

UK release date: 6th March

Sci-fi horror is a booming business, and, after a few years of drudgery and misfires, new takes on classic literary and movie monsters seem to be in vogue once again. In recent years, we’ve enjoyed fresh versions of Dracula, the Invisible Man, and, now, we’re being hit with a Frankenstein twofer.

Arriving hot on the heels of Guillermo del Toro’s lavish gothic adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is Maggie Gyllenhaal’s second writer-directorial effort The Bride!, which kicks the action a hundred or so years ahead to 1930s Chicago. Drawing from James Whale’s Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Gyllenhaal positions Christian Bale as a mobster-adjacent version of Frankenstein's creature, whose years of loneliness have taken their toll. Dr Euphronious (Annette Bening) mixes him up a companion - the titular Bride (Jessie Buckley) - and in this new creation, we find the focus of the film. But any expectations of domestic bliss and subservience are unlikely to be fulfilled.

Gyllenhaal earned her stripes behind the camera on her first feature, The Lost Daughter (2021), so it’s exciting to see what she will do with a genre piece. And that she’s working with some of the biggest talents around in Bale, Buckley, and Bening only adds to our anticipation.
