20 Most Anticipated Sci-Fi Movies Arriving In 2026
8. Mortal Kombat II
UK release date: 8th May
It’s been four years since Simon McQuoid relaunched Mortal Kombat on the big screen, and while it wasn’t exactly Marvel-level in scope, budget, or impact, it did deliver the right kind of spills and thrills, and contained enough favourite characters, finishers, and feuds to keep fans of the franchise sated. Well, next year the sequel is finally arriving.
McQuoid is behind the camera once again for a new adventure that sees the champions of Earthrealm do battle and attempt to resist the rule of malevolent brute Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford). All the big names are back from the previous instalment, including Kano, Jax, Sonya Blade, and Scorpion, but this time we also get Kitana and Johnny Cage.
For a while, there was something of an underground campaign to get Nicolas Cage into the Johnny Cage part, and while that didn’t go anywhere, the producers have played a blinder and snagged Karl Urban for the role. He has the action chops to deliver, looks the part, and seems like he fully understands the tongue-in-cheek comedy of the character.
Plus, the film finally arrives at the fighting tournament (something the previous entry built up to) and is pitched on a far grander scale, with the visuals and effects to match. If all goes well, we could be looking at a third movie in half the time.
