20 Most Anticipated Upcoming Horror Movies

7. The Meg

Halloween movie
Warner Bros.

After 20 years in development hell, Steve Alten's 1997 novel Meg finally makes it to screens this summer, with Jason Statham starring (alongside Li Bingbing) as a turtleneck-clad Navy diver caught in a deadly conflict with a megaladon - a 70 foot prehistoric ancestor of the great white shark - which has surfaced in the Pacific.

Readers of Alten's novel, and fans of gory shark movies in general, may be a little dismayed that The Meg has already been passed a PG-13 by the MPAA. It seems feasible that Eli Roth, the first director attached to the film, may have walked away due to constraints on the viscera; and replacement director Jon Turteltaub has generally produced family-friendly work in the past.

Even so, when you consider how much gore Jurassic World and Kong: Skull Island got away with - not to mention the fact that Jaws, the film against which all shark movies are measured, remains a PG-13/12 - surely we can hold onto some hope that The Meg will deliver similar gruesome delights.

And above all else - come on, it's Jason Statham fighting a giant shark. Shut up and take our money.

Release: 10 August

Ben Bussey hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
