Director Eli Roth, a name most closely associated with horror at its most extreme (Hostel, The Green Inferno), looks to be venturing into a rather different corner of the genre with this adaptation of a 1973 horror novel for children by John Bellairs.

Child actor Owen Vaccaro (the Daddy's Home movies) stars as an orphaned boy who is sent to live with his mysterious uncle (Jack Black). However, it transpires that both his uncle and their next-door neighbour (Cate Blanchett) are practitioners of magic, and there is a deadly secret within the house itself that threatens the entire world.

No word yet on the rating, but given the source material and the fact that this is a production of Steven Spielberg's company Amblin, it seems likely that The House With A Clock In Its Walls will be geared towards all ages; a definite change of pace for Roth.

Plus it won't be Jack Black's only kid-friendly horror of the year, as he's also poised to reprise the role of RL Stine in the sequel to Goosebumps, due October.

Release: 21 September
