The horrifying conclusion to Philip Kauffman's remake of the 1956 sci-fi classic bolstered its status as one of the boldest, bravest remakes in film history.

Committing to the bleak vision the original film wouldn't, Kauffman ends his film with an exhausted Matthew Bennell (Donald Sutherland) walking through the streets, as he's spotted by the only other human in the city who hasn't been replaced by a pod person, Nancy (Veronica Cartwright).

At that moment, however, Matthew turns to Nancy, points and lets out a piercing scream, confirming that he too has succumbed to the aliens, while Nancy lets out a defeated cry.

It's almost unfathomably depressing, but the right move creatively, and Sutherland's unforgettably creepy facial expression is surely burned into the mind of everyone who's ever seen it.
