2025 Palme D'Or winner It was Just an Accident might not have been nominated for Best Picture as it should've been, but it's a strong contender for the best movie of 2025.

A layered, genre-bending and hauntingly powerful masterpiece, this tells the story of a group of former Iranian political prisoners who face a moral dilemma when one of them, Vahid (Vahid (Mobasseri) captures a man who may or may not be a revolutionary guard who tortured them in jail. Made in secret by director Jafar Panahi, who's repeatedly been persecuted by the Iranian state for making films that criticizes it, this is a tragically timely story that only gets better and better as it progresses.

This unpredictable story weaves through many different characters and a brilliantly unpredictable plot before eventually arriving at its note-perfect climax, during which Vahid and his ally Shiva (Mariam Afshari) - now the only members of the group still with Eghbal (Ebrahim Azizi) - tie the to a tree and interrogate him.

During this confrontation, Eghbal finally confirms that he is indeed their former torturer, setting the stage for a fearsomely intense knockout of an ending featuring the exquisite writing, unsettling moral ambiguity and Oscar-worthy (yet criminally snubbed) acting that powers the rest of this modern classic. Truly, this is something else.
