Coming from the director of—well actually this’s easily his only non-divisive film, so let’s say 2006’s unfairly hated satire Southland Tales—this moody 2002 sci fi drama follows Jake Gyllenhall’s titular outcast as he is plagued by small town ennui, a close-minded school system… oh, and a terrifying maybe-alien giant rabbit and some form time travelling doomsday prophecy visions.

This one requires more than one viewing to appreciate and unpack its subtleties, but outside of the complex, ultimately sort of circular and tragic plot, it's also worth revisiting for the stellar soundtrack and Gyllenhall’s magnetic performance, an incredible turn where the star managed to be somehow both sullen and energetic at once.
